All cutting-boards are finished using a non-toxic, FDA approved, food grade butcher block conditioner. This conditioner is composed of a penetrating food grade mineral oil stabilized with water-resistant beeswax, carnauba wax and Vitamin E. Periodically, these cutting boards should be imbibed with a similar butcher block conditioner, mineral oil or butcher-block wax, which can be easily found and ordered on line, as well as at many specialty wood-working stores across the nation. Directions for use will be found on the label of the bottle, tube or can. These products are hand-rubbed into the surface and can be applied whenever you want to give your products a substantial new luster and to bring out the natural beauty and grain patterns. They should also be applied to help sustain the longevity of your items. Every 4-6 weeks is recommended.
The glue used to laminate the boards and secure the inlays is non-toxic, water resistant, mildew resistant and compliant with the FDA for indirect food contact.
All woods used for the cutting boards will naturally take on a varied amount of spotting and streaking over time due to moisture from cleaning and various chemical reactions, (i.e. citric acid, garlic oil, chili oils, beet juice, greens, etc.). These blemishes, spots and streaks can be diminished with proper cleaning methods, as described in the Cleaning and Care page.
As well, over time the wood grain can begin to "lift" slightly when exposed to repeated saturation with water due to the cleaning process. This can be minimized by making sure to use luke-warm water (as opposed to hot water) when cleaning the surface of these boards. Again, an application of butcher-block conditioner, mineral oil and / or carnauba wax will aid in minimizing this effect.
Thanks,
Sincerely,
